norwegian studies

University of Washington | Spring 2009 | Kathryn Merlino, Jan Olav Jensen | 4 months

During the spring of 2009 I was given the incredible opportunity to study in Norway for four months on the Valle Scholarship and Scandinavian Exchange Program. My intention was to explore the ways that the reuse of the existing built fabric contributed to issues of sustainability, both environmental and cultural. My research was based in Oslo--a city that has conveyed a commitment to its built environment through the successful reuse of buildings in the urban context, despite having abundant undeveloped land. It was my aim to not only study building reuse in Norway, but also begin to understand the variations in cultural attitudes to urban redevelopment and the appreciation in the value of existing buildings.
